Greenfield is a Milwaukee County city of 37,803 people (2020 census) covering about 11.5 square miles, with the Root River flowing through its western part. It was first named Kinnikennick by the territorial legislature on March 8, 1839, and renamed Greenfield in 1841 after postmaster Olney Harrington suggested the change.
Greenfield was the last municipality in Milwaukee County to incorporate, in 1957, and its motto is Pledged to Progress. Interstates 41 and 43 serve the city, and since 2022 the Powerline Trail has run through town.
The Root River corridor and the newer Powerline Trail give Greenfield residents plenty of green space to enjoy.
