Removing Trees Near the Water

Waukesha County has specific rules for vegetation removal near lakes and streams in its jurisdictional areas. If any tree or vegetation is removed within 35 feet of the ordinary high water mark, replanting is required using trees from the county Priority Tree list, and native, healthy trees 12 inches in diameter or larger within 300 feet of the water must be replanted if they are removed. Tree cutting in environmental corridors can also need a permit.

Requirements depend on exactly where your property sits, so confirm them with Waukesha County Planning and Zoning (the Planner of the Day line is (262) 896-8300) and your municipality before work begins. We are glad to walk the site with you and help you plan.

Public and Private Trees in Oconomowoc

The City of Oconomowoc maintains city street trees and says trees on private property should be maintained by their owners. City street tree pruning and removals are scheduled during the winter months from November through March, on a six-year cycle by aldermanic district. In the Town of Oconomowoc, local code also says no one may let a hazardous tree or a tree that creates a dangerous condition remain on their premises.

Either way, a dangerous tree on your lot is yours to address, and we can do it safely.
