Wauwatosa lies immediately west of Milwaukee and is home to 48,387 residents (2020 census) in about 13.2 square miles, with the Menomonee River running through the city. The name honors the Potawatomi Chief Wauwataesie and the Potawatomi word for firefly.
The first Euro-American settler, Charles Hart, arrived in 1835 and built a mill on the Menomonee River in 1845, which is why the early settlement was called Hart's Mill. Wisconsin's first railroad made Wauwatosa its western terminus in 1851, and the community became a village in 1892 and a city in 1897.
Wauwatosa has historic character to match. The Washington Highlands Historic District, designed in 1916 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, is among its best-known neighborhoods, and Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. In older neighborhoods, tall mature trees are part of the streetscape, and protecting them takes skilled pruning and honest advice about when a tree can be saved.
Wauwatosa's urban forest has official recognition too. The city appears on the Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA list with 39 years of recognition as of the 2020 list.
Thoughtful pruning removes deadwood and weak limbs while preserving the natural shape and strength of older trees.

Crabapples and other ornamental trees add spring color to many Wauwatosa yards, and apple scab is one common leaf disease that can affect them, showing up as dark, scabby lesions on the leaves.
Scab and similar problems can often be managed when caught early. If your ornamental trees show spotted leaves, early leaf drop, or branch dieback, we can diagnose the cause and recommend the right next step.
Look for dead branches, large cracks, leaning, fungus at the base, or soil lifting around the roots. When in doubt, request a tree health risk assessment from our ISA Certified Arborists.
