Waukesha County covers 581 square miles west of Milwaukee, including about 31 square miles of water, and is the third most populous county in Wisconsin with 406,978 residents (2020 census). Waukesha is the county seat, and the county was organized in January 1846. Its name comes from a Potawatomi word meaning fox, a nod to the Fox River that runs through it.
The county is made up of 8 cities, 21 villages, and 8 towns. Its northwestern corner is known as Lake Country for its many lakes, and the Waukesha County Park System protects natural areas for residents. The land was originally home to the Menominee, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Ho-Chunk peoples.
Native trees such as white oak, red oak, sugar maple, red maple, shagbark hickory, and paper and river birch shape many Waukesha County landscapes, while popular non-native choices include Japanese maple, Norway spruce, lilac, and ginkgo. Whichever you have, regular care keeps them healthy and safe.
Prized for strength and longevity, oaks can suffer from oak wilt and oak anthracnose.
Leaf spot diseases, aphid infestations, and root problems are common concerns.
Pine needle scale, blister rust, and fungal diseases can weaken evergreens.
Needle cast diseases and spider mites often show up on spruces.
Powdery mildew and dogwood borer infestations can affect these flowering trees.
Several communities in the county appear on the Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA list, based on the 2020 list: Waukesha (42 years), Oconomowoc (28), Delafield (24), Brookfield (23), Menomonee Falls (21), and New Berlin (19). Explore our local pages for more about each area:
